Not only is it important to focus on quality construction for a more energy efficient home; what goes inside the home makes a difference as well.
The Need For Fresh Air
An ERV, also known as an Energy Recovery Ventilator, is a system used in every Starr home. Because our homes are so tightly sealed and insulated, it is crucial to bring in fresh air from outside. This is what the ERV is used for. It is a way of bringing fresh air into the home without sacrificing the energy efficiency of your home!
Stale indoor air is replaced with healthy outdoor fresh air without bringing the cold or heat that comes with it. An internal component of the ERV, the heat exchanger, is used to ensure that large amounts of hot or cold air are not being transferred into the home. For example, in the summer when hot air enters the ERV, the heat exchanger uses cool air inside to cool the warm air coming in, supporting a more comfortable environment. The same process applies in winter; cool air that passes into the home is warmed by the hot air exiting the home.
This process brings in quality fresh air without kicking your AC or heat on high. An ERV system also transfers some of the moisture from outdoor air as well, creating a more consistent humidity level within the home.
An ERV is an extra step that really makes a difference in the comfort level of your home!
