Building Green

Starr Homes is known for energy efficiency that cuts utility cost, improves air quality, and creates a more consistent interior environment. Starr Homes uses superior craftsmanship to boost the energy efficient power of the home. The extra steps are not required by code, but Starr Homes believes that it is worth it to create a better, greener home. The numbers speak for themselves! The HERS Index Rating System is utilized in every Starr home!

HERS Index Ratings

The HERS Index rating on home energy was created by RESNET (Click here to learn more about RESNET) and is utilized to rate the energy efficiency of a home. All Starr homes are inspected by a certified RESNET Home Energy Rater. Each home is given an index score from 0-150; 0 being completely energy efficient, and 150 being the highest energy expense.

0- On the HERS Index, a level 0 home means that the home produces as much energy as it consumes. A Net Zero home has many benefits; including very low or no energy bills and reducing greenhouse gases.

150- A home that rates 150 on the HERS Index results in the highest energy bills and can be a drain on finances. A home rated 150 will be very hot in the summer and cold in the winter.

130- A score of 130 is a typical resale home. Many homes in the Kansas City metro area rate around 120-130. Resale homes are usually about 30% less energy efficient than they should be.

100- The standard code-built home is around 90-100 on the HERS Index rating. This means that it meets the current industry standard for energy efficiency.

50- A typical Starr home rates in the mid to lower 50s! This means an energy savings of anywhere between 35-50% less than a standard newly built home. This significant amount of savings can offer many benefits: substantial utility savings, friendlier on the environment, and a higher comfort level within home. Here is an example of the annual savings that you can achieve with one of our given homes:

Building a Starr home means more energy efficiency that's easier on your wallet. These homeowners have an average savings of $3,442 every year!
